Area II · Narrative Distance & Point of View
Internal Focalization
Single-perceiver filter
Restrict every detail to what one viewpoint character can perceive in real time.
Definition & mechanics
Internal focalization restricts every sensory datum to what one viewpoint character can perceive in the present moment. No omniscient knowledge, no other minds, no information the focalizer could not physically register. The filter enforces suspense and authenticity.
A curiosity
Suspense is often just information discipline. The reader fears the room because the character cannot see into it either.
Example
Before (omniscient)Maria heard footsteps. Behind the door, the intruder gripped his knife, sweating, unaware she had already called the police.
After (focalized)Maria heard footsteps stop outside the door. A floorboard creaked. Then nothing—only her own pulse, loud in the dark.

Apply the concept of Internal Focalization (restrict all narration strictly to what the single designated viewpoint character can perceive, know, and infer in real time; remove any sensory detail, thought, or fact outside that character's direct perception) to the provided text and rewrite in place. Apply the edits directly to the file as a clean, production-ready deliverable. Output ONLY the revised document text without embedding revision notes, changelogs, or meta-commentary in the file itself—put any explanations in your chat response only.
