Controlled Vocabulary

One term per concept

Fix a single term for each concept and never vary it for the sake of elegance.

Definition & mechanics

A controlled vocabulary assigns exactly one term to each concept and forbids synonyms. The literary instinct to vary word choice (“elegant variation”) is a hazard in technical writing: if “user,” “account,” and “profile” drift together, the reader cannot tell whether they name one thing or three.

A curiosity

In fiction, repeating a word feels clumsy. In a spec, changing it is the error—every new synonym silently asks the reader “is this something different?”

Example

Before (drifting)The user submits a request. Once the account's query is received, the profile's ask is queued.
After (controlled)The user submits a request. Once the user's request is received, the request is queued.

Apply the concept of Controlled Vocabulary (enforce one consistent term per concept throughout—identify cases where synonyms or near-synonyms refer to the same thing and standardize on a single term for each; eliminate elegant variation, even at the cost of repetition) to the provided text and rewrite in place.
