Area VIII

Precision & Disambiguation

Closing the gaps ambiguity hides in

Ambiguity is expensive precisely where it is easiest to introduce—in the pronouns, quantifiers, and hedges we barely notice writing. Resolve every referent, fix each term to one meaning, state scope explicitly, and calibrate certainty on purpose. The result reads plainer and leaves far less room for costly misinterpretation.

  1. Controlled Vocabulary One term per concept

Fix a single term for each concept and never vary it for the sake of elegance.

  2. Anaphora & Reference Resolution Killing the dangling “it”

Replace ambiguous pronouns with explicit referents so nothing is left to guess.

  3. Quantifier & Scope Precision Pinning down all, some, each

State exactly what quantifiers cover and how operators nest, removing logical ambiguity.

  4. Hedging vs. Commitment Calibrating certainty

Set the level of epistemic certainty deliberately rather than hedging by habit.

  5. Negation Reduction Say what is, not what isn't

Convert negatives—especially double negatives—into direct positive statements.

  6. Verb Tense Consistency Eliminating temporal shifts

Enforce a consistent baseline verb tense to keep temporal reference clear and unambiguous.
