Chunking & List Discipline

Grouping within memory limits

Group related items and cap list length to fit working memory.

Definition & mechanics

Chunking groups related items into a few labeled units, because working memory holds only a small number of things at once. In prose this means capping list length (roughly five to seven items), grouping long lists under headings, and giving parallel items parallel grammar so the pattern is easy to hold.

A curiosity

Phone numbers are chunked for a reason: 555-0134 is easier than 5550134. The digits are identical; the grouping is what your memory can carry.

Example

BeforeConfigure host, port, username, password, timeout, retries, TLS, cipher suite, log level, cache size, and region before starting.
After (chunked)Configure three groups before starting. Connection: host, port, region. Auth: username, password, TLS, cipher suite. Behavior: timeout, retries, cache size, log level.

Copyable Prompt
Apply the concept of Chunking (group related items into a few labeled categories rather than one long undifferentiated list; keep any single list to roughly five to seven items, add grouping headings when longer, and give parallel items parallel grammatical structure) to the provided text and rewrite in place.
