Progressive Disclosure
Layered detail
Reveal information in layers so readers take only the depth they need.
Definition & mechanics
Progressive disclosure presents the essential first and defers detail to later layers—summary before specifics, common cases before edge cases, overview before deep dive. Each layer stands on its own, so a reader can stop at any depth with a coherent understanding.
A curiosity
A good manual is a set of nested doors. The first sentence answers the common question; the appendix answers the rare one. Nobody has to walk through every door to use the room.
Example
Before (flat)The retry policy uses exponential backoff with jitter, a base of 200ms, a cap of 30s, five attempts, and honors Retry-After headers, and it retries on 429 and 5xx but not 4xx.
After (layered)The client retries failed requests automatically, up to five times. Details: exponential backoff with jitter (200ms base, 30s cap). Edge cases: retries on 429 and 5xx only; honors Retry-After.

Copyable Prompt
Apply the concept of Progressive Disclosure (restructure into layers of increasing detail—lead with the essential summary and most common case, then present specifics, then edge cases and exceptions; ensure each layer is coherent on its own so a reader can stop at any depth) to the provided text and rewrite in place. Apply the edits directly to the file as a clean, production-ready deliverable. Output ONLY the revised document text without embedding revision notes, changelogs, or meta-commentary in the file itself—put any explanations in your chat response only.
