Bottom Line Up Front (BLUF)

Conclusion first

State the conclusion or ask before the supporting detail, not after.

Definition & mechanics

BLUF—bottom line up front—front-loads the conclusion, decision, or request, then supplies rationale for those who want it. Readers get the essential message immediately and can stop or continue as their need dictates. It inverts the academic habit of building to a conclusion at the end.

A curiosity

Busy readers read the first sentence and skim the rest. BLUF respects that reality—it assumes attention is scarce and spends the most valuable position, the opening, on the thing that matters most.

Example

BeforeWe ran load tests across three configurations, analyzed the latency curves, compared them against our SLO, and after review concluded we should upgrade the database tier.
After (BLUF)Recommendation: upgrade the database tier. Load tests across three configurations show latency breaching our SLO under peak traffic.

Apply the concept of Bottom Line Up Front (restructure so the main conclusion, decision, or request appears in the first sentence or two, followed by supporting rationale and detail; ensure a reader who stops after the opening still gets the essential message) to the provided text and rewrite in place.
